When we decided to buy a Solaris 64RS, we looked carefully at everything else available in this size and style of yacht. In the end, the Solaris was the only yacht we found that didn't require us to compromise. Every other yacht we considered involved accepting one or more compromises in either the accommodation, deck layout or practicality.

For us, the off-centre companionway transformed life on deck by creating a far more sociable cockpit and allowing for a genuinely usable sunbathing area around the high-low table. Combined with the hydraulic passerelle, full-sized aft cabins without intrusion from the tender garage and a longitudinal garage capable of storing the tender fully inflated, these were all features that made a real difference to everyday ownership rather than simply looking impressive in a brochure.

When specifying  the Solaris 64 RS SOLITUDE, my objective was never simply to order as many optional extras as possible. Instead, I wanted to create a yacht that would be genuinely enjoyable to own over many years — easy to maintain, straightforward to operate short-handed and capable of comfortable extended cruising.

Almost every significant decision was made with that philosophy in mind. Esthec decking was chosen instead of teak because I believed it offered greater durability, lower maintenance and easier repair whilst retaining an elegant appearance. Folding cleats were specified wherever possible to reduce trip hazards and minimise the possibility of mooring lines or running rigging becoming snagged during manoeuvres. I also chose a gas galley rather than an induction system, as I preferred the independence of being able to cook without placing unnecessary demand on the yacht's electrical systems. The owner's cabin was reconfigured to provide significantly more storage for extended cruising, whilst a complete staysail preparation package was incorporated during construction to allow straightforward future offshore upgrades if required.

Following delivery, the Solaris 64 RS SOLITUDE benefited from a comprehensive commissioning and optimisation programme involving Solaris, professional crew and independent survey input. Every issue identified during the yacht's early life was addressed, allowing the next owner to enjoy a yacht that has already passed through the stage of ownership that is often the most time-consuming with a new build.

Perhaps what we have enjoyed most is that the Solaris 64 RS SOLITUDE has allowed our whole family to explore the Mediterranean for weeks at a time without ever feeling that we were looking forward to returning home to the comforts of a house. She has proved to be every bit as practical and comfortable as we had hoped when we specified her.

One unexpected pleasure has been the reaction she receives wherever we go. Whether in harbour or under way, it is remarkably rare for someone not to stop and compliment her beautiful lines and striking appearance.
